My Keurig Coffee Machine Won’t Turn On

Nothing is more frustrating than going to use your Keurig Coffee Maker only to find it will not turn on. Although it can’t hurt, whispering sweet nothings to your Keurig will not be the solution to turning it on. The good news is you can save your sweet nothings for your sweetheart and instead follow the troubleshooting steps below to get your Keurig turned back on as quickly as possible.

Step # 1: Eliminate Electrical Issue As Cause of Problem

If your Keurig Coffee Maker is no longer powering on, it is possible that the issue is with the electrical outlet rather than an actual issue with the brewer. To test if the issue is electrical, complete the following steps:

Complete an Electrical Outlet Check:

Make sure the coffee maker is plugged in correctly: Ensure the Keurig Coffee Brewer is properly plugged in to the electrical outlet by unplugging and then plugging the machine back in. Ensure the power cord is pushed all the way into the outlet to avoid any loose connections to the electrical outlet.

Try a different electrical outlet: To rule out that the issue could be with the individual electrical outlet, try an alternate electrical outlet to see if it fixes the problem. It is important to note that you will want the Keurig Coffee Maker plugged into a grounded outlet as surge protectors may not provide enough electricity to power the Keurig on.

Check the Power Switch on the Keurig Coffee Brewer:

Press and hold the power switch: Hold the power button until the Keurig screen lights up. Sometimes the issue is simply needing to hold the power button down for a longer period of time before it turns on.

Check that Your Power Source is Working:

Check the circuit breaker: Go to the circuit breaker box and flip the switch that controls the electricity to where your Keurig is plugged in. If there is a trip in the power, the circuit switch will flip in the opposite direction it was previously in. A flipped switch will not provide electricity to a source until it is manually switched back to on.

Step # 2 – Troubleshoot Additional Keurig Machine Functionality

Check that the Water Reservoir is Placed Correctly: Completely remove the water reservoir and then place it back into the Kuerig Coffee Brewer. Each water reservoir has magnets that connect to magnets in the machine. These magnets need to be aligned to ensure the machine will work properly. Ensuring your Keurig Water Reservoir is placed correctly could eliminate the power issue.

Eliminate Any Trapped Air Bubbles: At times, air bubbles can become trapped inside of the Keurig machine’s tubing. When the Kuerig Coffee Brewer is turned off the air bubbles can get stuck inside the tube. This can cause your coffee maker to think there is a clog resulting in a brewer malfunction. To fix the problem, it is recommended to fill the water reservoir halfway up and then give the brewer several gentle shakes to get water flowing through the lines. This should push out any trapped air bubbles out.

Step # 3 – Contact Keurig Customer Service

If you have tried all the above with no success, it is time to contact Keurig Customer Service. They will be able to assist you with additional troubleshooting for your machine.

My Keurig Machine Won’t Heat The Water

When your Keurig has issues heating the water, try these helpful tips.

Unless you want all your brews to be cold, this is one issue you will want to fix quicker than the rise in the summer heat index in the Sahara Desert. Follow the steps below to get your brew hot and steamy once again.

Step # 1 – Check the Heating Mechanism

At times the heating mechanism on the Keurig Machine can malfunction due to issues with the water pump resulting in a cold cup of coffee. When water does not pump through the brewer, the heating device turns off in order to prevent the coffee maker from overheating. The best way to fix this issue is to try the following:

  • Pull the water reservoir out of the base and then put it back in ensuring it is placed properly.
  • Flush out the machine’s tubing by fIlling the water reservoir with room temperature water. Hold the brew button down for 10 seconds to signal the Keurig to purge the remaining water.
  • Calcium build-up, dried coffee, dust or dirt can clog the Keurig causing malfunctions. Remove all detachable parts of the Keurig and gently turn the machine upside down. Shake it lightly to dispel any materials that may have gotten trapped inside the machine.

Step # 2 – Deep Clean the Keurig Brewer

If a deep clean on your Keurig Coffee Maker hasn’t been performed recently now would be a good time. A thorough clean of your brewer can help resolve a lot of issues and also keeps your Keurig Coffee Brewer in tip top shape. Click here for step by step instructions on how to deep clean your Keurig Coffee Maker.

Step # 3 – Contact Keurig Customer Service

If you have thoroughly cleaned your Keurig Coffee Brewer and are still experiencing issues with not being able to brew a hot cup then it is time to contact Keurig. It may be possible that you will need a replacement water pump.

My Keurig Dispenses Too Much or Too Little Coffee

If your Keurig is dispensing too much coffee, there are some different steps you’ll take.

The only time Cozy will agree there is such a thing as too much coffee is when your cup is overflowing. If your Keurig Coffee Machine is brewing so much coffee that your appropriately sized cup is overflowing it is time to troubleshoot the issue. Follow the below steps to get your cup back to the correct size.

Step # 1 – Check That the Water Reservoir is Placed Correctly

Completely remove the water reservoir and then place it back into the Kuerig Coffee Brewer. Each water reservoir has magnets that connect to magnets in the machine. These magnets need to be aligned to ensure the machine will work properly. Ensuring your Keurig Water Reservoir is placed correctly could eliminate the issue of a short cup.

Step # 2 – Perform A Water Only Brew

It is recommended you complete a water only brew on either the 6 or 8 ounce brew size. If you use a measuring cup to catch the water only brew, it will be a clear indicator if the correct amount of water has brewed. If the correct water has brewed, you have successfully flushed the machine!

Step # 3 – Check if The Water Filter is an Issue

For Keurig Brewers using a water filter remove the water filter and then run a water only brew on the 6 or 8 ounce brew size. Use a measuring cup to catch the water so you are able to gauge if the machine is successfully brewing the correct cup size. If the Keurig Machine brews the correct cup size, this indicates that the charcoal filter needs to be changed.  Once the charcoal filter is replaced,  place the water filter back into the machine.

Step # 4 – Clean the Needle

Another issue that can cause too much in a cup is when the needle that pierces the K-Cup is clogged by coffee grounds or hot chocolate mix. It is recommended you unplug the Keurig Brewer prior to cleaning the needles. Also, exercise caution as the needle on the machine is sharp. Please note, the below steps can vary slightly according to the model of your Keurig brewer. For complete instructions on how to clean the needle of your Keurig Coffee Brewer you can reference the Keurig website. To clean the needle, complete the following:

  • Completely remove the pod holder from the Keurig machine. Note, if this is your first time removing the pod holder from the brewer you may need to use extra force to pop it out of the machine.
  • Once removed, you will need to detach the funnel from the pod holder. The funnel will have a tube on the underside of the pod holder, insert a paperclip into the tube, gently moving it side to side to dislodge any clogs or loose particles.
  • Thoroughly rinse the pod holder and funnel under running water to loosen and dispose of any additional particles that could be clogging the machine. Once rinsed, set the pod holder and funnel aside until you are ready to place them back in the brewer.
  • Next clean the entrance needle, located at the entrance of the brewer head on most models. Take the paper clip and gently insert into the two side holes of the entrance needle to dislodge any clogs. Once this is complete, reassemble the pod holder and funnel, placing it back into the machine.
  • Once installed, lift and close the handle of the brewer a couple times. Then run a water only cycle two times using the largest brew size.

Step # 5 – Contact Keurig Customer Service

If the above troubleshooting steps have not resolved the issue then it is time to contact Keurig Customer Care for additional help.

My Keurig Machine is Leaking Water

Has your Keurig sprung a leak? This is a potentially messy issue that you will want to address as quickly as possible. Follow the steps below to troubleshoot a leaky Keurig Machine.

Step # 1 – Clean your Keurig Coffee Brewer

The most common cause of a leaky Keurig Coffee Brewer is a clog. A remedy for this is to  clear any build up or debris in the machine. The easiest way to do this is by  combining one cup of water mixed with 11 cups of white vinegar. Pour the mixture directly into the water reservoir. Without using a K-Cup, brew a couple cycles using the largest cup size option available on your machine.  This is an effective way to clear any clogs inside the brewer.

Step # 2 – Check That The Water Reservoir Is Not Being Overfilled

An overfilled water reservoir can cause the Keurig Machine to leak. Be sure to only fill the water reservoir to the max fill line at all times.

Step # 3 – Contact Keurig Customer Service

If the above troubleshooting did not fix the leak, then a hose or seal inside the machine may need to be fixed. If this is the case, calling Keurig Customer Service is your best bet.

My Keurig Leaves Coffee Grounds in My Cup

Getting a mouthful of coffee grinds with each sip? That is it! Your Keurig Coffee Maker is grounded. Haha see what Cozy did there?! Corny humor aside, nothing can ruin a good cup of coffee faster than finding grainy coffee grounds in your brew. To get back to a mug of smooth, ground free coffee follow the troubleshooting steps below.

Step # 1 – Clean the Needle

Grounds in your cup after brewing is usually an indication that coffee grounds have gathered in the exit needle of your Keurig, cleaning the exit needle should fix the issue.

Step # 2 – Check the Water

It is not recommended that Keurig Coffee Brewers are used with softened water which can result in a messy cup full of coffee grinds. If you have been utilizing softened water in your Keurig, switching to bottled or tap water should help. In order to flush the machine of any softened water, it is recommended to fill the reservoir with bottled or tap water then run several brew cycles without a K-Cup. This will flush out any of the soft water in the inner tank and tubes.

Step # 3 – Descale your Keurig Coffee Brewer

Descaling is an essential part of maintaining and cleaning your Keurig brewer. The descaling process is designed to remove calcium deposits, also referred to as scale, that builds up inside the Keurig over time. Descaling is recommended every 3 to 6 months in order to ensure your Keurig stays in top working condition. For instructions on how to descale your Keurig, click here.

Step # 4 – Contact Keurig Customer Service

If the above steps don’t seem to help in removing coffee grinds from your mug, it is time to contact Keurig Customer Service for additional troubleshooting assistance.

My Keurig Machine Randomly Turns Off

Are you ready to call Ghostbusters because your Keurig Coffee Maker is spookily shutting off all by itself? Never fear because Cozy is here!, Read below on how to troubleshoot this issue, no ghost hunters required.

Step # 1: Check to see if Auto Off function has been left on

The auto off function can sometimes cause the machine to randomly shut off. Fixing this issue will be slightly different depending on which Keurig model you own:

  • Keurig Elite – Your machine will display a green light indicating that the Keurig’s Auto Off Function is on. The Auto Off Function is programmed to automatically turn the Keurig machine off two hours after the machine is last used. In order to disable this function, press the black Auto Off button and make sure the green indicator light turns off.
  • Keurig Special or Platinum Edition –  Has an Auto Off Function designed to automatically turn off the Keurig machine after the machine is last used. To disable this function, you will need to access the Auto Off function on the machine’s programming menu. The left button which is an image of a small cup will need to be pressed several times until it indicates “off”.
  • Keurig Mini –  Has been designed to power off automatically after 90 seconds of inactivity. This is a built in feature for this model and there is no way to adjust this setting. You will need to simply press the power button prior to brewing your drink each time you go to use it.

Step # 2 – Check the Water Reservoir

The vibrations of the Kuerig Brewer can cause the water reservoir’s magnet to become dislodged and the Keurig can shut off as a result. Completely remove the water reservoir and then place it back into the Kuerig Coffee Brewer. Each water reservoir has magnets that connect to magnets in the machine. These magnets need to be aligned to ensure the machine will work properly. Ensuring your Keurig Water Reservoir is placed correctly could eliminate the issue.

Step # 3 – Contact Keurig Customer Service

If the above troubleshooting steps did not fix your Keurig brewer from randomly shutting off, Keurig customer service will be able to assist you.

My Keurig’s Add Water Message Won’t Turn Off

Water is an essential component for brewing coffee! If your Keurig Coffee Maker indicates you need to add water and you can’t get the message to turn off, you have come to the right place. Try Cozy’s Keurig troubleshooting steps to address this issue:

Step # 1 –  Verify that the reservoir is properly filled with the appropriate level of water.

Step # 2 – Clean the Water Reservoir

If refilling the water in the Keurig does not seem to fix the issue, the water reservoir is most likely due for a cleaning. Using warm water and liquid dish soap to gently scrub the water reservoir inside and out with a damp  non-abrasive cloth. Rinse the reservoir thoroughly, refill the water to the maximum amount allowed and replace back into the Keurig Machine.

My Keurig Machine is Brewing Weak Coffee

Lean on Cozy when your coffee is not strong! Read on below for tips on how to get the strongest brew from your Keurig.

Step # 1 – Ditch the Light Roast K-Cups

If you prefer a strong coffee, a stronger K-Cup may be in order. Water used to brew coffee in the Keurig Machine does not spend a lot of time in contact with the coffee grounds. The result can sometimes be a weaker cup of coffee. To fix this issue, try a stronger, more bold K-Cup.

Step # 2 – Brew a Smaller Cup

Another easy fix, is to opt to brew a smaller cup with your Keurig. This will cause your coffee to be less diluted resulting in a bigger, bolder taste.

Step # 3 – Contacting Keurig Customer Service

Keurig has a fast and responsive Customer Service team that is eager to help. They are a great resource for any Keurig issues you are not able to easily fix yourself. Prior to contacting Keurig customer service it is recommended you check to see if your Keurig is still under warranty. If it is, Keurig will often send a free replacement.

Step # 1 – Empty the Keurig water reservoir and remove the water filter if your Keurig model uses one

Step # 2 – Disable the Auto-Off function on the Keurig machine.

This is an important step because if you don’t disable the Auto-Off function your machine will automatically shut off and not allow you to complete the descaling process in its entirity. Disabling the Auto-Off function will be slightly different depending on which Keurig model you own:

Step # 3 – Turn the Keurig machine’s power off

Step # 4 – Add Keurig descaling solution

Add the entire bottle of Keurig descaling solution or a homemade Keurig cleaning solution to the water reservoir. Keurig sells a descaling solution intended for this step. For best results, the Keurig Descaling Solution is the recommended cleaning solution when descaling your Keurig. Another option is making a homemade cleaning solution by mixing one cup of water with 11 cups of white vinegar.

Step # 5 – Run brew cycle

Power on the Keurig and place a large container or mug underneath the brewer to catch the solution as it runs through the brew cycle.

Step # 6 – Run a no K-Cup brew cycle

Lift and lower the handle several times. Then select the largest brew size that your model of Keurig offers and run a no K-Cup brew cycle. Run the Keurig through multiple brewing cycles until the Keurig signals that it needs more water.

Step # 7 – Allow your Keurig to stand for 30 minutes with the power on.

Step # 8 – Pour out descaling solution

After allowing the Keurig to stand for 30 minutes, pour out any remaining Keurig Descaling Solution from the water reservoir and rinse it thoroughly.

Step # 9 – Rinse and repeat
